SHAH ALAM – Pas president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang has reportedly hinted at stepping down from his post due to health reasons.

According to party sources, the revelation has triggered internal discussions among the ulama faction, who are now working to persuade deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man to prepare to take over the leadership.

"This matter was raised by Hadi himself during the retreat last weekend, where he hinted at being unwell due to his current health condition.

"So, he expressed that he might step down. That’s what sparked the current debate and discussions,” the source told Sinar on Thursday.

The source added that the ulama faction is advocating for the continuation of religious-based leadership in the party.

In light of this, Pas Ulama Council Committee member Mokhtar Senik has proposed that the candidates for president and deputy president be vetted by the Syura Ulama Council to ensure their qualification and credibility.

Pas vice president Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah has urged members to avoid leadership conflicts that could destabilise the party, adding that should Hadi step down, the role should naturally pass to his deputy.

However, questions remain as Tuan Ibrahim is said to be hesitant about assuming the top post.

"Hadi has set a high benchmark. So perhaps Tuan Ibrahim feels a bit overwhelmed. That’s what I think,” he said.

Hadi’s health concerns are not new. In January last year, he was treated at the National Heart Institute (IJN) and underwent dialysis.

He was also hospitalised in June 2023 due to breathing difficulties and was later transferred to IJN for further treatment.
