KUALA LUMPUR - The Malaysian Indian Skills Initiative (Misi) continues to make strides in digital empowerment, recently hitting another milestone with the successful completion of its AI-Powered Photography and Visual Editing Programme in Masai, Johor.

The programme equipped 25 aspiring creatives with practical skills in technology, visual media and entrepreneurship.

Held from April 16 to 20, the five-day intensive training brought together 25 participants from the Malaysian Indian community, providing them hands-on experience in using artificial intelligence (AI) for photography, video editing and business development.

The tech-induced course was designed around three key components.

AI-based photography and visual editing techniques

In this segment, participants were introduced to cutting-edge AI tools that simplify image enhancement, background removal and visual composition.

These tools allowed for faster workflows, professional-quality visuals and innovative storytelling methods, even for beginners.

Participants learned how to harness software like AI-powered photo editors, background changers and style-transfer tools to boost their visual creativity and output quality.

AI-based video editing

In this module, attendees explored how AI can transform raw footage into polished content with minimal manual input.

From automated cutting, audio syncing, subtitle generation to visual effects and transitions, participants gained essential skills for creating engaging digital videos suited for content platforms and client-based work.

This segment also highlighted the use of AI in personal branding, content marketing and social media optimisation.

Creative income generation and business development

Recognising the importance of financial sustainability, the programme offered a practical introduction to turning creative skills into income.

Participants learned about freelancing platforms, how to pitch creative services, monetising social media content, managing clients and scaling up a digital business.

This segment emphasised entrepreneurial thinking and provided step-by-step guidance to start and grow a small creative business in today’s competitive digital landscape.

By combining these three areas, the programme not only strengthened participants' technical competencies but also equipped them with the tools and mindset to turn creativity into a sustainable livelihood.

Honouring new talents and digital pioneers

At the closing and graduation ceremony, all 25 participants received certificates of participation, symbolising both achievement and the start of a new journey.

The recognition also served to inspire continued learning and exploration within the rapidly evolving digital creative industry.

"Misi’s mission is to empower the Malaysian Indian community with skills that go beyond employment. It’s about fostering creativity, entrepreneurship and long-term career growth," Misi said in a statement.

This initiative was part of Misi’s ongoing efforts to close the digital gap and ensure that underserved communities have meaningful access to emerging technologies and digital career pathways.

The AI-Powered Photography and Visual Editing Programme was organised under the Human Resources Ministry and delivered through the Human Resource Development Corporation.

The programme reflected Misi’s commitment to preparing the Malaysian Indian community for careers that aligned with the demands of the digital era.

Additionally, it also echoed the progressive vision of Minister Steven Sim, whose leadership was pivotal in creating a more inclusive and skills-driven Malaysia.

"His steadfast support for this kind of initiatives reflects his dedication to empowering all communities through education, innovation and digital inclusion," it said.

Misi said Sim has consistently championed equitable access to digital skills and innovation, positioning him as a leading voice in Malaysia’s push toward a sustainable and inclusive digital economy.

Misi’s broader impact

Since its official launch in November 2024, Misi has successfully enrolled over 8,000 participants in high-demand fields such as AI, smart farming and drone technology.

These initiatives by Misi aimed to create a future-ready workforce while addressing talent shortages in key sectors.

Misi’s long-term approach goes beyond just securing employment as it focuses on promoting entrepreneurship, lifelong learning and career advancement, with the goal of enabling long-term self-sustainability for the Malaysian Indian community.

By empowering individuals with both technical know-how and entrepreneurial thinking, Misi continued to redefine how marginalised communities can thrive in the digital age, ensuring no one was left behind in Malaysia’s digital transformation.
