Secretary and adviser to the mayor of Mexico City shot dead

The perpetrators opened fire on a car carrying the mayor's personal secretary and an adviser on a main road in the centre of the Mexican capital on Tuesday.

MEXICO CITY - Two close associates of Mayor Clara Brugada have been shot dead in Mexico City, German Press Agency (dpa) reported.

The perpetrators opened fire on a car carrying the mayor's personal secretary and an adviser on a main road in the centre of the Mexican capital on Tuesday, according to a statement from the city hall.

They then fled on a motorcycle. The background to the attack is still unclear.

"The crime will not go unpunished. Those responsible will be arrested and brought to justice," the city administration said.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum offered her condolences to the families of the victims and assured the city administration of the federal government's support in the investigation.

"We will get to the bottom of this, and justice will be done," she said. Before her election as president, Sheinbaum herself was mayor of Mexico City.

In 2020, suspected members of the Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) drug cartel carried out an attack on the then police chief Omar García Harfuch in an upmarket residential area of Mexico City.
